In what would have been Jeff Buckley's 2nd album, had he lived to complete it, this extraordinary musician once again demonstrates his spectacular vocal talent and his ability to experiment and expand his panoramic musical range. Probably for many listeners, this album may at first disappoint. However, ultimately, I found it more pleasing than Grace. Sketches has a quality of punk theatre rock. It is sharper and more pared down in melodythan Grace. The album employs both soulful and playful lyrics, in a genre that transcends jazz, rock and beyond. Notably, Jeff develops the subject matter and content of his lyrics, an area which some commentators, in the past, have criticized as not being his forte. The first disc consists of producer Verlaine's time with Jeff, which came to an end in Fe bruary 1997. From February to May, 1997, he commenced to work on additional songs, and reworking some of the existing songs. You will find this later track list on the 2nd disc. The first disc, reflecting Verlaine, does have a slight tell tale quality of professional factory production. However, Buckley's transcendent vocals and technical guitar proficiency shine through.
