Click to expand. The problem with following random guides on the internet is that they often are outdated, ill-supported, and may be written by someone who doesn't really know enough to be teaching others. The Lifhacker guide you reference for example still recommends Waninkoko's cIOS rev17.the scene has long ago passed on that rev. To get your Wii back in shape I recommend on re-modding your Wii using. Just follow the ModMii wizard ('W' option) and choose to re-download all files as if your Wii is a virgin. Everything launched on the Wii depends on only one IOS, each IOS have different functionality, Nintendo created new IOSes instead of updating the same one. (you can consider it like multiple firmwares containers instead of '4.3 firmware'). 4.3 is in fact a program, like any homebrew, not a firmware. When you launch System menu 4.3, it loads IOS70 because it contains the needed functions to run correctly. When you launch Homebrew channel, it loads IOS58, because it contains USB 2.0 access functionality (and doesn't care what System menu version or region you current have installed on your console) When you run an USB loader, it's the same except that you can choose which IOS to use (249, 250, 222 etc.) It's the cIOS which grants you USB access regardless of the current system menu version. You only have to update your cIOSes and you will be able to use USBloaders. Latest recommended cIOS is d2x_v6 (it supports Dol reloading games, like Metroid prime Trilogy, CSI games, sam & max).
